Shadow
Shadow, nodded, pleased, but still eyed the gun warily. She wanted to ask why everyone was together, but she was having trouble figuring out how. With a question in her eyes, she motioned to the group. She hoped they could guess what she was talking about, but all she got were a few blank faces. Shadow took a deep breath, frustrated. She'd been mute ever since she was born, of course; but she'd never felt any need to speak to people before, and she was having a little difficulty figuring out how to say things. Eventually she decided that it wasn't important enough, and followed the group out into the forest (to make greensalmon's comment possible). Her acute hearing picked up a slight rustle in the trees. Startled, she gestured wildly at the spot it had come from.
Lily
Lily noticed them coming. She didn't know what to do, and let out a small growl. Not sure if they would attack, she prepared to hit them first. Crow came to the tree to see what was there and Lily bit his arm hard and ran off.
"She's to fast to be a zombie." Crow said
After seeing that, they chased after her.
Shadow
Shadow outran them all, pushing forward at a speed that was nearly impossible for someone her size. But, then again, she'd known what it was like to run for her life long before the apocalypse began. She cut Lily off, heart beating and daggers poised for use. The two of them stood there, neither girl speaking. Neither could. Shadow tilted her head to the side. There was a question in her posture that hung heavily on the tip of her lifeless tongue, but she didn't know how to ask it. Instead, she waited for the others to catch up.
greensalmon: Once I read poisoned daggers I was thinking: No! I can't die NOW! I just got here!
Lily
Lily felt a connection between herself and Shadow. They both couldn't speak, and had a great sense of hearing. Lily touched Shadow on her shoulder. Unafraid, Shadow touched Lily. Once the others caught up, they all pulled out a weapon.
"Shadow! Look out!" Kat shouted.
That moment, Kat fired a gun at Lily, but it hit both her and Shadow. They both squealed, and Lily knew that Kat would be her enemy. Lily was about to run, when Shadow pulled her back. Everybody stood there, blank.
Ele4: Well, technically Shadow can't make any sounds like squealing. But yeah. XD
Shadow
Clutching her injured hand, Shadow shook her head at Kat. Desperate tears started welling in her eyes. No, she wanted to say. Stop. She's different. She couldn't say that, but she could use herself to shield Lily. So she did.
Shadow wasn't really sure why. Lily looked like a zombie. But she sensed the connection, as well, and her curiosity was so great that she couldn't let Lily be killed.
greensalmon: Omg... I typed my thing and forgot to hit submit and then closed the page!
Lily
Lily was shocked that she was guarded by Shadow. Lily looked at Kat angrily. Then she stared at everybody else. Who could she trust? She took a deep breath and put her and out. Everybody stared at it. Shadow pointed to her hand. Kat stood a little closer, and shook Lily's hand with her finger. Lily smiled and knew they would be a great team fighting the evil zombies.
P5: Omg, I know what you mean! I hate when that happens! I finished writing this post right after you submitted your post, so it doesn't quite match with the shaking hand/finger thing. Sorry! But it is close, still the same result
Ekaterina
"Shadow? What are you doing? Th-that's a zombie!" Kat was shocked and so were the others. Shadow shook her head, tears in her eyes. Kat seemed to understand. She was different.
Kat got on her knees next to the two to tend to Shadow's hand and Lily's shoulder. Lily was squirming to try and get away, but Shadow's grip got tighter on Lily's arm. Shadow shook her head at Lily, pointed to Kat and smiled, as if to say she's nice, don't worry, she'll help you.
Once they were both bandaged, Andrei helped Kat stand the two girls up. "I'm really really sorry! I-I had no clue, I-I thought you were like all the rest! Please, come with us, we'll take care of you. I promise." Kat was beginning to cry as she talked to Lily, she felt really bad for shooting Lily and Shadow.
"Do you have a name?" Kat asked her, Lily nodded. "Well, what is it?", Lily tried to say her name but a groan came out instead. "Huh?" Kat realized she was still a zombie and couldn't talk. Lily bent down, took a rock, and wrote in the ground L-I-L-Y. "Your name is Lily?" Kat asked, Lily nodded and smiled. "Okay! We're happy to have you with us!" Kat smiled.
Lily
Lily smiled, happy to know she was welcomed. There was a growl from a zombie in the distance. Lily knew that they couldn't leave a zombie out in the open. She ran off, and beat it until it fell. Everybody watched quietly. Lily stood up and looked back. They all knew she could think and almost only looked like a zombie. Lily knew of many places with and without zombies. She gave them a signal to follow her, and they headed off to building.
Shadow
Shadow followed, trailing behind the group. She debated whether it was really wise to stay with them. But she reasoned that they could help her fight off the zombies, so she decided to stay, at least for a little while. She needed to keep to the shadows, though. If there was one thing she'd learned in her life, it was that to be noticed was to die.
As they passed through the urban area, Shadow picked up a newspaper from the week before the apocalypse began. It had her face on the front cover, listed as a thief and a murderess. Her head darted around, making sure no one was watching, and she stuffed it into her bag.
She hadn't meant to kill him.
(Ele4: Sorry, I didn't know what to type. I figured I could incorporate some backstory into there. XD)
Lily
Lily looked back at Shadow. She called her over with her hand, and continued walking. Once they made it to the building, Lily pointed to it with a 'Ta-da!' like pizzazz. The group stared at the abandoned warehouse. Where's the pizzazz? Lily busted a window more than it was so it was big enough to get through. She climbed through and looked at the others on the outside. She motioned them to come in, but they stood there. Shadow heard a noise from inside the building, and flailed her arms in the air to get Lily back out. Lily looked confused, and then knew what the problem was. A moment later, a zombie grabbed her and pulled her down, deeper into the building. Everybody looked inside but couldn't see her. Shadow, with the desire to save her friend, grabbed her knives tightly and jumped in after her.
Shadow
The floor was farther down than Shadow expected, but she rolled into a standing position, her eyes wide and staring blankly at the darkness. She stomped loudly on the ground, hoping to draw attention to herself. She heard an answering moan from Lily, and rushed off blindly.
Stupid, stupid, Shadow told herself. Having friends gets you killed. She sheathed one of her daggers, her hand flailing blindly. She couldn't risk cutting open her friend. Her hand met another, which grasped it tightly in an almost pleading way. Shadow knew it was Lily. She located Lily's assailant with her hand, and lopped off its head.
The two of them stood there in the middle of almost pitch blackness. Shadow had followed Lily further than she thought. They were lost. And another moan let them know that they were not alone.
greensalmon: That was funny.
Lily
Lily growled back at the other zombie. She got down into a fighting position. The zombie charged at her as fast as it could. Lily grabbed it, and threw the zombie over her shoulders. Kain shouted down from the window. It sounded really far away. Lily and Shadow needed a plan to escape.
greensalmon: I'll leave the plan to you. I can't think of one!
Shadow
Shadow blinked rapidly, trying to get her eyes adjusted to the dim light. She grabbed Lily's hand and started walking haphazardly toward the exit. She could see the rectangle of light that was the window, but only just barely; the light from the setting sun was dim, and the window was somewhat distant. Did she dare pull out a match? She had precious few, and the zombies would be attracted to it like moths to a flame.
A couple of creaking sounds behind her let her know that the zombies already knew her location, she she struck a match and lit the newspaper with the article about her. Together, she and Lily made a run for the exit.
When they were outside, she doused the flame. To her dismay, half her face and the terrible accusations written in that bold newspaper print hadn't been consumed by the flame, and they were in full sight of the others. Shadow froze.
Lily
Lily stared at the paper with her eyes wide. She backed up from Shadow, a little concerned. Everybody was. Lily looked back down into the warehouse and hear more zombies. They were following the smell of the flame that was lit. A green hand grabbed the ledge of the window. A zombie was coming out with some backup.
Shadow
Shadow dropped the paper and backed up. The zombies were a welcome distraction. She started running, and it wasn't just from the zombies.
If she could have spoken, she would have explained that she hadn't meant to kill him. It wasn't her fault. As it was, all she could do was say a silent goodbye to her brief friendships and make a run for it. She could survive on her own. She had been, for years. She didn't need them.
That didn't stop a silent tear from slowly running down her cheek. She would miss being accepted.
